‘Fans are bracing themselves for an expected 10 per cent hike in ticket prices, which could raise as much as £5m at a time when other income streams are drying up.

‘Last week, United unveiled a 54 per cent fall in profits as income from TV deals and prize money fell. A spokesman said: "No decision has been taken regarding next season's ticket prices. We hope to present something to a fans forum this week." But an Old Trafford source said prices would be going up. "Revenues are under pressure and it just remains to be seen by how much.

‘"Last year ticket prices went up by around £1 per game. One thing we are looking at though, is to increase prices for the better seats more sharply."’
